A voicemail message from Mike’s predecessor plays each night, in which he explains different aspects of the history of the restaurant. Players control Mike Schmidt, who has signed up for position as a night security officer at a family pizza restaurant called “Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza”. Finishing the main game unlocks a higher difficulty sixth night, the completion of which subsequently opens up a seventh “custom night” during which the player can adjust the AI difficulty of the animatronic characters. The game has five levels comprising five “nights” in the game, each increasing in difficulty. If the player is jumpscared by any of the animatronics, they must restart from the beginning of the night. After a random amount of time, the office will go pitch black and Freddy will jumpscare the player, resulting in the game ending, unless the player makes it to 6 a.m. Mike is fired from his job after the seventh night for “tampering with the animatronics, body odor and general unprofessionalism”. Who assists them in their defense against the animatronics. The player is guided by an entity known as Phone Guy. The hostility of the animatronics appears to result from the possession by the vengeful souls of children who were killed at the restaurant. They cannot leave the room and must use a camera system and two doors with lights to defend theirself from the animatronics, with limited power to use their tools. Animatronic movement is explained to the player as a purposely-programmed “free-roaming” mode, to prevent the animatronic’s servomotors from locking up. Who begins working as a night security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, where the animatronics move at night and supposedly kill anyone they see by stuffing them into a spare animatronic suit.
The first game revolves around a character called Mike Schmidt The restaurant’s main animatronic, Freddy Fazbear, will subsequently appear in the left doorway with flashing lights in his eyes while a music box rendition of “Toreador March” plays.
Use of these mechanics consume the player’s limited electrical power if all the power is exhausted, the cameras become inoperable, the doors open and the lights go out. The player cannot leave the office, and must close the office doors for self-defense, also achieved by clicking buttons adjacent to each door. The cameras do not cover certain areas of the building, most notably the two hallways directly to the left and right of the player, which require checking by lights that the player can control by clicking a button located adjacent to each door in their office. The camera feeds are poorly lit and grainy, and one security camera, located in the kitchen. Each animatronic character has distinct movement patterns, and most of this movement takes place off-screen. These feeds are used to track the movement of the mobile animatronics throughout the night. The player, alone in an office, is given access to a network of security camera feeds that provide views of various parts of the restaurant. (several minutes in real time) without being jumpscared by the four animatronic characters that inhabit the facility. The player acts as a night security guard for a fictional pizza restaurant, and must complete their shift that lasts from midnight to 6:00 a.m.
Gameplayįive Nights at Freddy’s is a survival horror video game with point-and-click elements. It’s elegant in how it sows fear, and is a must-own for anyone who likes scary games. Simple still images and proper character design steal the show in this game, and show that Scott Cawthon knows quite a lot about the secret fears people feel when looking at creepy dolls and toys. It’s a fantastic example of how cleverness in design and subtlety can be used to make an experience terrifying. If something isn’t right- namely if Freddybear or his friends aren’t in their proper places, you must find them on the monitors and protect yourself if needed!
